In asking whether poetry and modern technology are a good fit, a less than flattering profile of certain tendencies in the nature of poetry is drawn, not to blacken the reputation of the genre, but instead to warn of possible temptations offered to poetry by technology.

If this seductive Faustian-style bargain is to be resisted, poetry must hold a mirror up, not only to nature and the soul, but to itself. There may be a very good fit between poetry, the Internet, and media technology in general, but it is a mixed blessing.

What Does Poetry Do – or Say?

Judged against the furious activism – political, technological, social, and personal – of the modern era, poetry is the soul of passivity. While poetry literally does do something (it produces physical marks and sounds, which can cause an emotional impact), it advocates no reforms, and invents no new technology.
