When my oldest child entered 7th grade, he was required to enter an exhibit into the annual science fair. My first reaction was panic, because I remembered my experience when I was a kid…I was more of a creative type, and sticking to the scientific method was a huge source of anxiety for me. My project board was beautiful but it was more flash than substance…so although I managed to get a passing grade, my project would never win any awards.
Science Fair Panic and Relief
I tried to hide this anxiety from my child, but I had lots of questions spinning around in my head. Which project would he choose? How long would it take? How will he get this done within the specified time frame? How much help would he need from me?
You can imagine how relieved I felt when my son’s teacher sent home a packet containing a list of project ideas, a project time-lime, and some guidelines for parents and students to follow. She also asked for help organizing the fair, and since I was so impressed by how well thought-out the packet was, I signed up. As the volunteer coordinator of the fair, I learned a lot about the importance of planning ahead.
